Homemade Bed Buddy

I am always cold in the winter time and we keep our heat set fairly low to save on those bills. I've been meaning to make a "bed buddy" for quite some time and I finally made one this weekend! I didn't use a pattern or anything and it was so easy. I made a "pillow" out of a scrap of plain white fabric, filled it with white rice (not minute rice) and sewed it shut. I then made a removable case for it that can be washed. I just warm it in the microwave for about 2 minutes, then put it under the covers by my feet. It stays warm for quite a while and keeps my feet so nice and toasty. I love it! My girls both want one now. I wonder if these might make good frugal Christmas gifts for next year?

I love that idea! I should make one for my grandmother to use while she sits.

Hi - I think these would be great for presents. It's lovely. I put these on a list of frugal Christmas gifts but have yet to do them - I got the list ideas from the organized.Christmas site. I also wondered if I could make tiny ones to go inside gloves - I've seen something similar in the shops.

What a wonderful craft. I have been wanting to do something like this for a while now. I also want to do in a tube shape to have a neck wrap.

Yes, they will make great Christmas gifts! Sign me up!

Yet another reason why I wish I could sew. *sigh* Maybe someday. I should probably learn to cook first. lol! :)

Thank you for the feedback! Since you all think it's a good idea guess what everyone will be getting for Christmas next year? :)

I can do some "pocket" size, some in a tube shape...thanks for the ideas! I also thought about putting some lavender or other herbs in with the rice to make it smell good when it's warmed up.

Amanda, if I can learn to sew anybody can! I didn't take a single home ec class in school and the only things I knew how to make when I left home were toast and Hamburger Helper. :)

Put me on the "yes, it's a great idea" list. LOL I was going to suggest the lavender as well, but you're a step ahead of me. ;-)

Amanda - my teachers thought I was dreadful at both sewing & cooking. What I found out years later when I married was that I was dreadful at sewing & cooking if shouted at & expected to produce results quickly (which is what had happened at school). If I take my time & am relaxed I find I can do both ok & I bet you will too!

Hi,
I was browsing the internet for the mix of lavender in a neck bed buddy and discovered this great site!
I was rear ended this summer and I have a pain "in the neck". I want to put lavender with the rice to help me sleep better. Anyone know the formula?

ps I love the patterns on the home page as I have some that look llke them. (only old and tattered).
HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone
