How to Knit

I've had some requests for knitting instructions. I taught myself how to knit from a book. If you don't know anyone who knits, you can check out a knitting book from the library or you can learn from videos. Sometimes it's easier to learn from actually watching someone knit in person or on a video than learning from a book.

I found a couple of knitting videos for you that might be helpful.

This video is all about the different types of yarns available. Hobby Lobby often has yarn for half price and Wal-Mart sometimes has yarn on clearance. I've even found some nice yarn at Dollar Tree. Knitting does not have to be an expensive hobby and you can make some really nice hand made gifts.

This video shows how to cast on. It's the first step in knitting.

This one shows how to make the basic knit stitch.

Hopefully this will get you started. Remember that it takes practice. I made LOTS of mistakes as I was first starting out and still do. Just keep with it. After a while your hands will be making that knit stitch without you even having to think about it.

Another good online learning site is knittinghelp.com- they have tons of good videos, from basics to advanced techniques.
A great resource for patterns, help, organization, etc- is Ravelry.com; it's a free site, but you do have to ask for an invite (usually takes a week or so) I highly recommend using it- the wealth & deepth of knowledge available is terrific :-)

There was a yarn shop in town (closed now) whose owner was very helpful when I was learning to knit. I made my one and only pair of felted mittens with her help. I love knitting, but find I must really concentrate, or I forget where I am...and I'm talkin' REALLY simple dishcloths!

Thank you, thank you!! I have been trying to teach myself how to knit and crochet. I even found some books at a thrift store(25 cents each). I hope to get better with more practice and time.

Someone tried to show me once, but I just didn't get it. BUT I do crochet, and quite enjoy that, so once I actually finish a crocheting project I might come back and learn to knit. :)

Thanks for taking the time to post this, though!

I actually learned to knit when I was a young girl. Yet I have not really done any thing with it. I have done more with crocheting. I love how you can learn lots from on line or refresh your memory of things you have learned already. That is what I did recently when I was going to tie a quilt.
