Chocolate Gravy

I'm finally posting the long awaited chocolate gravy recipe! :)

I usually start my gravy before I start the biscuits. This gravy will have to simmer 10 minutes or so and the biscuits bake up so quickly.

Combine in a saucepan (This pan is as old as I am. Seriously.):
2 tablespoons cocoa

2 tablespoons all purpose flour
1 1/2 cup sugar

3 cups water

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Whisk it all together.

Bring to a boil over medium heat and simmer for 10 minutes or so. It will SLOWLY start to thicken.

Pull your biscuits out of the oven. This one pan of biscuits would not have been nearly enough if all the kids were at home.

Butter your biscuit (that part is critical) and pour the gravy over. Mike likes to split his biscuits, butter each half and then pour the gravy over.

So yummy! Don't think about the calories. :)

My great grandmother made chocolate gravy for us when we were little. I have made it a few times but I feel so gulity giving it to my kids for breakfast. There is nothing like the smell of chocolate gravy, biscuits, coffee and bacon to take me right back to being a kid again. It makes me miss the sound of roosters and a tractor in the distance. The my great grandfather would come in from working for breakfast and he would smell like soil and hay. I miss those days. I cannot wait to someday be a grandma and give my grandbabies chocolate gravy. Also I am so glad to be moving back to the country, YAY!

I grew up on chocolate gravy and I still love it. Is is just a southern thing. I could eat it everyday but now it is just a once in a while treat.

I have never had chocolate gravy, but this brings back memories of childhood friends whose mother used to make it. Thanks so much for this post - I'm so glad I happened upon your blog. You have a new follower, now! :) Happy Friday!

P.S. I echo the statement: if you could share a good biscut recipe - that would be appreciated. I know if I were to make homemade biscuits and chocolate gravy - my girls would be absolutely surprised and delighted! THANKS!

I can't believe I stumbled upon this blog post!!! I ate chocolate gravy all the time as a child. I am 56. My mother passed away unexpectedly 30 years ago and I never got her recipe. This looks like it might be close. I can't wait to try it!

Thanks so much for transporting me back to my childhood for a few minutes...

My Grandmother made it for us when we were young, then my Mom. I now try to but it just don't taste the same as when my Grandmother, and Mom made it. But they never measured anything so that could be the reason I can't get it to taste like theirs. We always had it on pancakes, now I have to try it on biscuits.

We are huge fans of milk gravy here, but I should try this! Your biscuits look perfect. I just started baking mine in my cast iron. Not sure why I didn't do it before?! The biscuits turn out great in them :)
