Frugal Photographers

Clever Photographer by Eveline Lance
Clever Photographer

As a frugal mom, I almost never buy school pictures. They usually aren't that great and they are outrageously expensive. Why would I pay $20 for 8 wallet photos? When you have more than one child in school (and even if you don't), that's WAY too much. The elementary school takes pictures both fall and spring and I'm sure Cindy's softball team will want us to buy team pictures.

I was thinking of just taking my kids to a cheap photography studio, but retrohousewife had a great idea. She suggested talking to someone who is just getting into photography and is interested in building a portfolio. Now why didn't I think of that?

Her niece is just such a person. She will take pictures of my kids in several poses, in a location of my choosing and put them on a CD for me so that I can print the ones I want. I'm going to see if we can get some pictures at a nearby park that has a waterfall. I can't wait!

Thats a wonderful idea. I am a amateur photographer and wish that more people would do that!

For other people who dont know amateur photographers you can call your local college, a lot of the times they have photography students looking to expand their portfolios. You can do this for weddings and all kinds of things to save money.

I take my own children's pictures. They aren't always perfect, but they're pretty good!

Wonderful idea! My parents used to buy all of our pictures taken at school. I really wish they hadn't becuase they were always horrible!

It's great to be at your blog again. I took a bit of a break from blogs. But it's nice to see them again!

That's a great idea. I don't know why pictures have to be so expensive. I hope they turn out real well for you.

As someone who has gotten suckered into buying school pics twice now, I will be taking my own kids pics in the future or bringing them to JC Penny. JC Penny actually has some pretty good deals now & then!

A very good idea; I gave up on the school pictures by the youngest's middle school years- they were always turned out awful & horribly expensive. I take him over to the local dept store photo studio & do the basic package for $20 or so.
Now that it's time for *gasp* senior pics, we'll go to the "recommended" studio for the requiste yearbook shot & a friend will do a whole portfolio for free & use as advertising for her budding business.

Just out of curiosity, how much is this lady charging you? I think it's wonderful that you'll get the CD and can make your own prints!!!
