Cleaning Up Christmas

Anyone else still putting away Christmas decorations and vacuuming pine needles out of the carpet? I have the majority of it done, but I still need to take down the small artificial tree in the kitchen and my Christmas village.

I'm trying to make sure I put everything in the attic in an organized manner to save myself some aggravation next Christmas. I'm also planning to browse the 75% off decorations. Most of my lights finally gave out this year (as you can see if you look at the big dark spot on the tree in the Christmas morning pictures) and I know I won't want to buy them at full price next December. Might as well plan ahead.

This is also the time of year when I desperately need to clean out the refrigerator. I baked and cooked (and ate) my way through December and there is no telling what leftovers and gunk I'm going to find. I'm pulling out a trash bag and my rubber gloves this afternoon. If I don't come back send a search party!

Oh... after you clean out yours, would you tackle mine. I know I have some crab dip in there from Christmas... how gross is that.

I did most of it over my holiday break but I still have to take the lights and tree down so I saved the most fun for last haha.

It used to be that everyone left all their decs up till 12th night and then had a big party, I start taking mine down boxing day and guaranteed their is always something left up - I have a nice purple sparkly star haninging from my curtain rail and a silk poinsettia flower tucked amongst the buttons on top of the bookcase - both out of my reach so there they will stay.
I daren't even look in the fridge, I know there is something green and slimey in the veggie crisper, so maybe today is the day for removing it, pity theres never a kid around when you need them.

I've got two more days until I take down the tree, although I'm afraid how baby will react to its disappearance! Cleaned out the fridge last night..kinda scary task there! Good luck with the rest of your holiday cleaning doll, and happy new year!

This is what I tell myself every year....and I never seem to make it as organized as I would like, as the following year will tell me so, thanks for encouraging us on!

Can't take down the decorations until my daughter comes home from N.C. We will celebrate with her on Sunday :)

I've only gotten as far as "thinking about" cleaning out the fridge. Have the day to myself tomorrow. Maybe I'll tackle it then.

The family helped me take things down Saturday. I love that they wanted to help but come this November when I take everything out the attic I'm going to be very unhappy. There is living room decor in the kitchen decor boxes & outside decor in the dining room boxes.
Hope you have better luck finding lights. I went the day after Christmas & there was nothing around my parts.

At a holiday retreat I attended once there was a speaker who was a professional organizer and her tips were fantastic. She stores all her Christmas in the red/green totes so that when you tell someone to bring down the Christmas decorations there's no going through tub after tub to make sure you've got the right ones. She also suggested (and I admit I now do this) buying those adhesive clear "invoice enclosed" pockets. You attach them to the outside of the bin, then you write on a 3x5 index card what you're putting in there. Takes a little time at first but what you save later down the road is unbelievable! I've got my decorations packed/labeled by room. It also helps keep down the chaos because I can take a specific rooms tub down, decorate that room and then move on to another one. The crazy mess of boxes that I used to deal with is no more!

i am in the middle of packing away decorations now as we speak, its not as much fun as when we put them up is it? I love the ones the kids made when they were small and now they have children of their own and especially the angel that my mum made the year before she died unexpectedly. It is made of felt but covered in sewn on by hand sequins,Ah well packing away till next year.. we are in the middle of big freeze here in England so making lots of soup for supper warm up..

I know what you mean about the fridge! I cleaned mine out after Christmas and WOW! I couldn't believe how much stuff was packed in there that we forgot about. Yuck! I still need to take down the tree though. Started working on Valentine crafts and forgot all about the Christmas tree. lol

Hi, first time visitor and I am really enjoying your Blog. Such fun and informative posts. I have put off putting away decorations because I have promised myself to organize the red and green totes and so far that hasn't happened. Oh well they will come down before the end of the month...I think, no wait I Promise!

We still have our decorations up but we'll be taking them down this weekend. I still leave some of the winter items up like the snowmen, etc. as it's still winter and it transitions well into my winter romance theme for February!

We have a HUGE artificial tree that stays on the enclosed porch all year. We do take off the ornaments, but the tree and the lights stay put. Since we live waay out in the country, it's handy to be able to tell people to "I'll turn on the lights on the Christmas tree" so they can find our place in the middle of the summer.

I clean one shelf of the fridge each week, the night I put out the garbage. Top shelf, first Tuesday, second shelf next week. It's corny, but it works.

My mom lives in a retirement center and will often bring lunch leftovers to her apartment and put them in the fridge - where they stay forever. Just before Chirstmas, hubby and I found some hard-crab legs from Labor Day (early September). They'd gone past the smelly stage into rattling when you shook them. Ugh!
