We watched a wonderful movie last night called Mrs. Miniver. Alison at Brocante Home mentioned it a few weeks ago and it sounded like something we would enjoy. It won 6 Academy Awards in 1942 including best picture and best director. Mrs. Miniver is a British housewife who holds her family together during WWII which was of course still going on at the time this movie was filmed. It's definitely on my list of favorite movies of all time!
What are your favorite movies of all time?
Favorite Movies! Lets see Pleaseantville,The Flamingo Rising (this movie is one of MANY reasons I own the worlds smallest Drive-In Movie Theater), Gas Light (1944),A Star Is Born (1937), Call Me Madam... Oh there so many, too many to list!
ReplyDeleteGrapes of Wrath, Arsenic and Old Lace, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Best Years of our Lives, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and I Remember Mama. I love old movies and I have bought several on dvd. It is always nice to watch a movie without being worried about its rating.
ReplyDeleteI loved this movie too...until I found out that in real life Greer Garson was romantically linked(married to?) the guy who plays her son in the movie. Weird.
ReplyDeleteI love It's A Wonderful Life, The Lost Weekend, The Birds, Wizard of Oz, old comedy movies with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis movies, so many more...
ReplyDeleteGone with the Wind!
ReplyDeleteI love To Kill A Mockingbird and The Wizard of Oz!
ReplyDeleteOh and The Out Of Towners (the old version)!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a great film, i'll have to check it out! xx
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be different and say "Dirty Dancing." That was so my era and the movie captured the feel of the times explicitly. I loved both Jennifer Grey (although wish she had never gotten a new face) and Patrick Swayze . . . well, what can you say about Patrick Swayze? I could watch him dance all day long.
ReplyDeleteSince You Went Away, The Glenn Miller Story, One Foot in Heaven, On Borrowed Time, This is the Army, just about any movie from the 1930's & 1940's!! And a few from the 1950's!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Meg Ryan movies, maybe because she resembles my personality in so many ways...Favorites; The Women, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail...Because I Said So (Diane Keaton)
ReplyDeleteAnything with Bing Crosby. I love Holiday Inn, Going My Way, The Bells of St. Marys, etc.
ReplyDeleteOh, I watch old movies every day on TCM! I have bought some DVDs too and "Mrs. Miniver" is one of them. I love the grand MGM musicals, and the quieter B&W dramas. As I type, I have "A Tale of Two Cities" on the TV.
ReplyDeleteI love anything romantic and sentimental. I am hopeless.
WendyBee
Anne Of Green Gables series on public television. Love it, love it!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed Mrs Miniver, such a great movie. I got the book and a biography of the author for Christmas
ReplyDeleteThe author of 'Mrs Miniver' , Jan Anstruther, was the lady who wrote the lovely hymn "Lord of All Hopefulness" [do you sing that one in the USA??]
ReplyDeleteblessings xx
It's a very good movie.. love it.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to rent this movie and watch it. My mom and 2 older sisters talked about Mrs. Miniver all during my childhood (I was born in 1946). They just loved it. Of course back then we didn't have DVD's, so I've never seen it. But just seeing the name "Mrs. Miniver," I can remember them talking about it, they loved it.
ReplyDeleteEach decade brings new favorite movies for me. My newest favorite is Avatar. Movies don't get any better. Possibly the greatest movie of all time, so far. Some critics say the plot is hokey. But the plot is what I like about it. It's a heart-warming movie about the human spirit and what's really important in life.
Did I say "human spirit?" I need to change that to the "life spirit" to include all species.
I saw Avatar twice. The second time, I sat by a family who were also seeing it for the second time.
I loved the movie Australia, with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. A great World War II movie, plus a great love story.
Casablanca is just perfection in a movie. The great number of different characters in the movie, each with their own personality and personal delimma, caught up in the events, is very interesting to watch. "We'll always have Paris" brings tears to my eyes even as I type the words! Love lasts forever.
I bought some old Roy Rogers movies and enjoyed watching them very much. Good people, good music, just great to watch. Good to remember the high optimism of the 1950's.
