Make Do Monday - Iced Coffee

I looooove iced coffee in the summertime. I like the Starbucks version and the McDonald's version, but my budget doesn't like either. I only get to drink it occasionally as a splurge.

It finally hit me yesterday that I could make iced coffee at home (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer am I?). Mike made me my usual cup of coffee and I just stuck it in the freezer while I took my shower. After it was nice and chilled I poured it into a tall glass, added milk, a couple of Splenda packets, and some ice. It was delicious! Even though that's probably not how iced coffee is really made, I like it so I'm going to keep it up. Why didn't I think of this a long time ago?

I'm linking this post to Ann Kroeker's Make Do Monday, but I don't know that it's really making do. After all, now I can have iced coffee anytime I want!

  2. YUM!! I have always kept my leftover coffee from the morning and put it in a pitcher to chill for iced coffee....SO good!!! A splash of chocolate syrup stirred in is super good too =)

  3. That *totally* sounds like making-do to me! You're making-do with the coffee you have on hand instead of buying new! Enjoy your new frugal pleasure this summer--my hub is the coffee drinker in our house. I'm a tea girl myself, and I do like iced tea.

  5. I do this every day!!! My husband loves it hot, and I love it cold so I get all the leftovers. After he's done drinking from the pot of coffee, he puts the rest in a plastic container for me to drink the next day. I add milk so that it's about 75% coffee, 25% milk, and it tastes so good!! Very thrifty :)

  6. I love iced coffee and make it often! It certainly is much more economical than buying it at Starbucks. :-)

  8. Hello!
I thought I'd share my little 'recipe' for iced or chilled coffee.

Make your coffee twice as strong as normal.
I like to add my sugar while it's scalding hot, that way it mixes in better for a smoother taste.
I normally like my coffee sweet, but since this mix will be diluted a bit, add more than you usually do.
eg: I have 6 cubes in a standard mug, but for my ice coffee I put 10 per mug.
If you want your coffee flavoured, add any flavouring now.
Vanilla is natures sweetner, so cut down on the sugar if you add this.
If you use those flavoured creamers, use less sugar too.
Let it cool then transfer to pitcher. (I have a plastic pitcher, so I do all my mixing in my mixing bowl)
I usually add almost the same amount of milk as there is coffee (for chilled coffee) it will be a nice blond color.
For iced coffee I tend to leave it darker and pour over blended ice.

    :)

    Yay for iced coffee everyday!!!

  12. I love coffee, what a wonderful idea! I'm just starting reading your blog and I really am starting to feel like my place is in the home. I'm a teacher by trade but have been unsuccessful finding a job the last five years. I told my husband staying home makes me the happiest. Thanks for writing about homemakers and the 50's in your blog. It's inspiring to know I'm not the only one out here.

  13. I do this, only I cold brew the coffee. It makes for a less bitter brew.

1 1/2 cups water, to 1/3 cup coffee, let it sit 12-24 hours, and then strain through a fine strainer (or use a French press). I keep this in the fridge and in the morning mix it with half milk.

So much easier than brewing coffee in the morning!

  14. I would love to try it, i love iced coffee, but Monday, my stinking, rotten excuse for a coffee pot died, and i am having to make-do with no coffee. someone send coffee, it is an emergency, i may have to break-down and drive the 11/4 miles to town and buy a cup of coffee...
otherwise, i will be doing without until payday.

  15. I worked at Starbucks for a few years, and I'll tell you - that's EXACTLY how we made the iced coffee :)

Well, its brewed double strength so that when we add ice it doesn't get too watery. But we brewed it in the morning and put it in the fridge to chill with ice. :)

  17. I've worked in at a coffee shop and that sounds pretty much right to me. Smiles, if you've ever tried those flavored ones "vanilla, caramel, etc..." they're really simple to do. Add in a lil bit of coffee flavor syrups. I especially love the Monin Sugar Free. But they aren't exactly cheap. (though a bottle will last for forever) But anyways. Great job!

  18. I make it at home too. Drink hot in the am, use the left overs to make coffee cubes in an ice tray. Then brew some reg coffee, sweeten it and chill in the fridge. When I'm ready I add the coffee cubes, cream and chilled coffee. Perfect ;P
