Preparing For Guests

Breeze Blowing Bedroom Curtains
Breeze Blowing Bedroom Curtains

We have company coming next week! Peter is finally back from Iraq and he is coming home on leave and also bringing his girlfriend. If you knew Peter you would know what a big deal this is. He never really dated and was more likely to spend time with a group of friends (that might include a girl or two). Now he is bringing his girlfriend J all the way to Texas! This is not just a passing thing.

I am so nervous, my husband can't stand me. :) I want J to feel at home here. She was raised in a very different environment than how we live. She grew up with a life of privilege, housekeepers, and world travel. We are just country people who might go camping or to a theme park every now and then for vacation and live in your average suburban ranch style house. I don't even have a working dishwasher for heaven's sake!

Peter is going to bunk in with Bobby and I am going to get the guest room fixed up for J. It usually serves as a room for Greg or Peter when they are home and it's full of a lot of their "junk" and leftover bits of furniture that don't fit anywhere else in the house. So please bear with me for what is sure to be a week of rambling nonsensical posts as I try to tear down my house and totally rebuild it for $23. ;)

By the way, I am so hoping Peter hasn't told J about this blog. If she is reading this I think I'll crawl in a hole and die! I don't want to embarrass Peter even further! ;)

  1. Don't apologize for your family! If she can't appreciate what a lovely person you are (or seem to be, from your blog posts!), then that's just too bad. If she really loves Peter, she'll love you too. :) Hope you get everything pulled together! I really think that so long as your home is clean, tidy, and a welcoming environment, that's all anyone can ask for! :)

  3. I know how you feel...but ONLY BE YOU! And that will be good enough. Times like this it's fun to get a bunch of stuff done all at once because of the motivation! Hehehe! I can't wait to hear about your visit and see some pictures and tell you son thanks for us...for his unselfish service to our country!

  9. PLEASE don't be embarrased about your home and posessions. I love home decorating and nice things, but even so there is NOTHING as beautiful as a home and family that feels welcoming, happy, and peaceful. If she is worthy of your son, that's all she'll care about too!

  10. I understand about wanting to make a good impression - especially if there is the possibility she may one day be your daughter in law! I am sure you will make a positive impression!

  11. Don't you worry about the "differences" in how they were raised. My DH and I were raised VERY different and those differences turned out to make Him strong where I am weak and Me strong where He is weak and our kids benefit. It ALSO rubbed off on each other where He learned from my strengths and I learned from His.

God is WONDERFUL that way. I am sure she will LOVE you...especially if you love her first. Just be yourself, be open and welcoming and everything will be fine.

Just remember, she must be special because your Son sees something special in Her and She HAS to be special because she sees something special in your Baby!

    Many Blessings :)

  12. Growing up I came from a background of big houses, housekeepers, cooks, etc. My bestfriend had the average american family and my cherished memories are the ones w/ her family. Not saying anything bad about my family, but for my "own" family I mimick the way my bestfriends mother did things. I cook most of her recipes b/c they are my families favorites. I manage my home as she did, she was my classic american mentor mom that I wanted to be. So, just to put your mind at ease. She will probably love the cozy homey feeling your family will give off. My husband had the same anxiety when I was about to meet his family. I'm sure your brother has told her how great you are.

  14. I just found your blog...I have shared the same moment...as I went through the very same thing two years ago.

My son just like yours described...same scenario... married her, a lovely gal and NOW she is the nervous one!

I made a nice "welcome" basket with lotions, special book marker, etc. she was very touched.

Truly the "HOME" with a heart is what counts and a loving family welcome.

    HOPE~
