Dear Mr. Cyclist

Cycles J.B. Louvet
Cycles

Dear Mr. Cyclist,
I know I am not as in shape as you are (as you like to show us all in your tiny little skin tight shorts) and I'm sure you think I'm hogging up all the earth's resources as I drive 45 children and teenagers around in my monster SUV. However, please remember that I am bigger than you are and frankly the highways are made for me and my SUV, not for your bicycle. When you have a flat tire, it is really not a good idea for you to stop in the middle of the road to work on your bike. I am driving 65 miles an hour as I come over that rise in the road and really can't see you until I almost get in a wreck trying to avoid you. I would rather not expose my children and my neighbor's children to a cyclist flattened on the highway.

Thanks for your consideration,

Amen Sista -- You keep preaching and I'll turn the pages! Every day on my way home there is this guy on his bicycle who apparently believes it is his God-given right to ride in the outside lane of traffic...not quite in the lane, but not quite on the shoulder. And best part is he has to ride over a fairly tall bridge and holds up traffic so that you never know if you're going to rear-end anyone when you drive over the top. The crazy parish I live in just passed a law which states you have to allow 3 feet when passing a bicycle but if there's someone in the lane next to you (and you know that lane is not going to slow down enough for everyone to go around) then you're at the mercy of the cyclist. It also says that bicycles are considered a vehicle with the same rights on the road as an automobile. The same rights -- seriously? Makes me so mad I have evil thoughts of throwing my door open as I pass.

Ooooh, the cyclists make me sooooo mad.

They are so asking for it.

On our country roads where there is no verge and many curves and little wiggle room they ride 2 and 3 abreast so they can chat at their leisure...

Go away, spandex people!!

Amen!!!

My SIL is a cyclist and I do worry about him on the roads. I just hope he isn't as crazy as most!!!

We live here in SW Va near the Blueridge Parkway and the biggest problem around here is motorcycles this time of year. Heaven forbid you meet one because they will surely be on your side of the road. Sometimes the whole pack is in the middle of the road. I might have to try the old door trick too!!!! It would be the domino effect for sure!!!

I am glad that I am not the only person complaining about others on her blog today ;-)

While I appreciate all of these comments, I also know that in many places, there aren't other places to cycle. And there isn't enough of a push (or, right now, enough money) to add bike lanes to the roads out there...

I'm not a cyclist, nor do I play one on tv, and I *do* think that they should be as considerate as possible (and it sounds like some aren't being that way), but until there is a good option for them, they *will* be on the roads, mixed in with regular automotive traffic. In Europe, there were bike and walking trails to and from even the smaller towns, and through the countryside. Bike lanes, etc. But it was built into the infrastructure, something we Americans have not done on a large scale.

I just wanted to add a few more thoughts to the conversation... (I live in OK, and there are a lot of cyclists out here where the roads are long and straight and only moderately hilly) :-)

Just as there are "bad and inconsiderate drivers" there are also "bad and inconsiderate cyclists." My husband is an avid cyclist and takes great care to maintain safety for both himself and the drivers on the road. In our state, cars are required to stay 3 feet away from cyclists. Although it is the law, many do not obey the law. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, a cyclist in town was obeying the law, riding where he was supposed to and two men who did not like the idea of people riding a bike, threw something at him causing an accident that killed the cyclist. He left behind a wife and 2 children. The two men were convicted of murder. For an inspiring story that just took place last week on behalf of adoption and the cycling community, please head over to my blog and visit.
I respect your opinion but please do remember that those who are on the bikes are someone's husband, wife, sons or daughters. They cannot all be lumped into one category as inconsiderate. Hostility toward those sharing the road with those who choose to cycle doesn't increase the safety of the rider or the driver.

ROFL!!!!!!! LOVE this post!!!!! As a Bostonian I encounter cyclists on roadways where they really don't belong on a daily basis--like on very narrow city streets where cars park on both sides and there is barely enough room for a compact car to navigate never mind avoid the nitwit on the bike hogging the road!!
You keep tellin' it like it is and I hope they are reading!! :)

It's so true. I have a cousin who's a semi-pro cyclist, but she rides trails, not the streets, which I think is the smart, safe thing to do.
