Cafe Terrace
My mother and I recently had the most perfect afternoon together. She took me to lunch at the cutest little cafe. It only had about 12 tables and was tucked away in an older part of town that I rarely visit. It was the sort of place that men rarely go to unless coerced, and almost every lady eating there was dressed up. It's not the sort of place that you go to in shorts and flip-flops. I was so glad I was wearing a skirt! We both had raspberry iced tea and a grilled shrimp, portobello mushroom, farfalle salad with a spicy dressing. Very "girly food" and I enjoyed every single girly bite.
Then we walked over to a vintage clothing shop. You wouldn't believe all the goodies! There were dresses, hats, shoes, jewelry, handbags and clutches...all from the 40s, 50s and 60s. We had so much fun "window shopping". The proprietress of the shop was a little strange and pushy, but she had some really gorgeous things (all priced way out of my budget of course but it was still fun to look).
Next we went to a thrift shop and I found two tops for Marcia and a dress for myself. It's one of those dresses that is sort of like a long t-shirt. It comes to my ankles and doesn't touch anywhere but the shoulders. I love it! It is the most comfortable thing ever, plus it was $5. I'm guessing from the lime green color and summery "fish" print that it was meant to be worn as a swimsuit coverup or beach dress, but I wore it to the grocery store. :) Please don't call the fashion police.
After that we went to an antique mall. Are you sensing a theme here? I found LOTS of things that I wanted to bring home with me. There was an vintage apron that was calling my name as well as some 50s patio furniture and a set of pink corning ware but I had to leave it for another day. I wish I had remembered my camera so I could show you how cute everything was.
As much as I love my menfolk, it's fun sometimes to have a day with no one saying "why are you looking if you aren't going to buy it?", "is it time to leave yet?" or "can't we just get a hamburger?". What are your favorite things to do with your gal pals?

my idea of a perfect day
I love to lunch with my girlfriends. Sounds like you had a great time with your mom!
What a lovely day! It's always so nice to go to lunch and be able to take the time to shop and look at things without feeling rushed. I think I might have had to buy the pink corning ware, that just sounds too cute!
sounds like you had a wonderful day - I am very envious of all of the lovely sounding stores you have there - I have to travel miles for anything remotely vintage!
I miss my mom now..but I have a great sister to do things like this with. Great post. Very nostalgic for me!
Sounds like you described my perfect day! I really enjoyed doing things with my mom while she was still here with me, enjoy every minute of it!

Girl time is so important!!!
I don't have a Mom that does 'fun' things, but I AM a mom that does fun things with my daughter. I have three sons and one daughter... we like to spend special time together doing 'girly' things!

What a fun day! I love 40's-50's stuff--its so neat! ...and my husband definitely doesn't understand the whole "window shopping" concept. It's fun for me even if I can't afford anything I'm looking at! hehe. I'm glad you had a great time with your mom.
i love browsing through stores and looking at junque...my husband thinks i am nuts. Thank goodness my daughters and daughter-in-law love to look too. I mean what choice do they have i have been dragging them to strange shops all their lives.
You're right...men just can't do that. Glad you had a terrific day with your mom and your dress sounds perfect for a summer trip to the grocery store.
I can so relate to it all--having to leave some things behind for another day, basking in the luxury of no one pressing you to hurry along, etc. My girls and I have girl days frequently and it's the BEST! Another thing I love to do is rummage through used book stores (unhurried and with a little money to spend). Thanks for a great blog!
Such a lovely post it sounds like you had a rather wonderful day! ♥
Sounds like an ideal day to spend with mom! How lucky for you! I wish I could have days like that with my mother. :)
That sounds so great to me. My mom is in California and I am in Florida so we don't get to do a lot of days like that together. Fortunately my mother-in-law enjoys thrift and antique shops as much as I do and I have her to it with!
Sounds like such a good time!
What a wonderful day! Right down to the letter! My dh would freak over the little cafe, over the vintage clothing shop, antiquing ..... well he would freak over all of it!!!!
But..... my girls on the otherhand love them some good "Mommy and Me" time!!!! I took my 14 year old grandaughter with me antiquing this week and OMG I have totally ruined her!!! She has never been so excited to find a good junk store and is already planning out the next trip....soon.
One thing that dh can't take and the girls all understand is.....when we are out for the day and we go somewhere to eat (usually nothing too shabby I might add) and then shop for an hour or so and we look at each other and say "I'm hungry" and of course that means Ice cream or something sinful :-) Not him, no way because afterall we just took away from getting ole grouch box home!!!!!
I am so glad you guys had fun!

Sounds like a perfect day! I love bargain shopping! Even more fun with mom!
Sounds wonderful! My favorite "just us girls" thing to do is hit the local bookstore, enjoy a latte, and browse the books and talk. I have a really good teacher friend who used to spend literally hours with me at the bookstore. We both have kids now and don't have time for such luxuries, but those were really, really relaxing times.
Noelle, I so agree with you! I would do the same thing. Some of my very favorite bookstores are 1)the Strand (NYC), 2)Sam Weller's in Salt Lake City, 3)Auntie's Bookstore, Spokane, WA. I would spend an entire day, and even had lists to work off of. Oh the joy!
How fun! I love chick food. Okay, I love food in general. My favorite things for girl time are getting pedicures and crafty stuff. We've taken classes on arranging flowers and gone to those paint your own pottery places.
I love reading your blog... I seriously think I was born in the wrong time period...
I left you a little award over at my blog... enjoy!
