I've known for a long time that I should make a price book to help me with my grocery savings. I've read about how helpful they are on several blogs and also of course in my thrift store copy of The Complete Tightwad Gazette. Price books are a great way to help you keep track of what the prices are so you can buy things only when they are at their cheapest.
I do have the prices of a few items in my head, but I sure can't remember everything. I guess I never made a price book because I couldn't imagine myself standing in the aisles of my local grocery store scribbling in a book. What if the manager asked me to leave? I would be mortified!
Well, I finally had a light bulb moment. Why not just use my receipts? Greg gave me a blank book and I got out my latest receipts, my Tightwad Gazette, and made a price book. It's small enough to slip in my purse and I will no longer stand in front of a sale sign at the grocery store and wonder if it's really a good deal.

This is something I have wanted to do for a while now and just have not buckled down and done it. I have The Complete Tightwad Gazette so I will have to pull it out and look this over. I think my pricebook could fit neatly in my Personal Notebook (I am doing that through Donna Partow's 90 Day Jumpstart Study and it is wonderful--I feel so organized!).
I was just thinking earlier today about doing something like this. It's hard to keep track of prices, though, as the price for everything keeps going up every month!
Oh I have so been trying t oget this started for a while. Actually, I have started, I just haven't followed through. I have created an excell spreadsheet to plug in my receipt info instead of a book, this way I can easily add up totals, compare costs for items, etc. The plan is, once I get it filled out, to print out a copy when I head to the grocery store to have on hand.
Good on you for actually following through! :)
I've just recently started writing down who has what for how much :)
It really comes in handy.
I need to do this as well. I had price books for the stores before we moved, but haven't done one for the stores here in Podunk. I'll pull out my TG and give it a go!
I tend to note prices mentally. But perhaps my shopping is a bit easier...there are only 2 of us and we eat pretty simple. I stock up on the essentials - flour, sugar, coffee, detergent, canned goods, etc. - whenever I see them on sale. Hate paying regular price for anything. LOL
When I started my price book, I sat down with the grocery ads each week and noted the sale prices. It was less embarrassing than standing in the store!
Don't you love the Tightwad?! We only have one grocery store, plus super WalMart in this town, so I don't keep a price book, but I do shop the sales. I wish we had some stores to compare! Wal Mart is not cheaper on everything like one might think, and the quality of their fresh stuff leaves much to be desired.
I use the household organizer form for my price book, then the grocery list from Donna Young. It really helps me know I am getting a real deal, then if I can add a coupon whew!
This is great! I have wanted to do something about this but thought I'd have to go to every store lingering at all the prices...using your receipts is a great idea...create the book as you go...a lot less intimidating. I will have to check out this tightwad book! :) Ashley
OH, this is funny! I just found your blog and we have so much in common! The Tightwad Gazette is my BIBLE! Well, besides my actual Bible.
